Freshman applicants have two choices as to when to begin at UF. The admissions office recommends you apply according to the term you would most like to attend. UF offers a freshman Summer session as well as the traditional Fall term. The summer session typically starts the first week of July. This is a six-week session in which students usually take two courses. After the completion of this Summer term, students return home for two weeks before returning for the Fall semester. Summer is an excellent time for new freshmen to become acquainted with the campus. Freshmen also have the option of beginning in the traditional Fall session. This session usually begins in late August.
Students must choose only one session on the application. There are a limited number of spaces available for each session. Please indicate your first choice on your application. Admissions decisions for both terms are made according to the competitiveness of the applicant. Refer to the Office of Admissions for more information on when to apply. Students who take Advanced Placement exams and score a 3 or better are awarded college credit at UF. International Baccalaureate exams with scores of 5 or better on upper level tests without the diploma receive college credit at UF, and IB exam scores of 4 or better receive credit when the IB diploma is awarded. At the time of application, it is not necessary to send any available exam scores to UF.
Please, however, have these scores sent once you choose to attend UF. The Office of Admissions has more information on Credit by Examination and Dual Enrollment Course Credit. Freshmen : Applying early and responding to the Department of Housing and Residence Education in a prompt manner will receive priority for campus housing. The Office of Admissions recomputes the high school GPA for every freshman applicant. Our admissions officers use the high school transcript provided to our office, and the grading scale included on that transcript. Only academic subjects are used in the calculation — English, math, social sciences, sciences and foreign languages freshmen are required to have successfully completed 2 consecutive units of a foreign language. Additional weight is added in the calculation to any courses that are Honors, Dual-Enrollment, AICE, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate.
